Kayak paddle length
When choosing a kayak paddle, start by determining the ideal length for your height. Stretch your arm straight up with fingers extended and measure the distance from the floor to your fingertips. The result (e.g. 225 cm) represents your base paddle length.
The width of your kayak also affects the correct paddle length – the wider your kayak, the longer paddle you’ll need, and the narrower your kayak, the shorter paddle you’ll need for a smooth and natural paddling motion.
Most touring kayaks are general-purpose models, typically 57–63 cm wide, which means you can choose a paddle length that matches your base measurement.
If your kayak is less than 57 cm wide, subtract 5 cm from your base length. For example, if your base length is 225 cm, the optimal paddle length would be 220 cm.
If your kayak is wider than 63 cm, add 5 cm to your base length. For example, 225 cm + 5 cm = 230 cm.
Sit-on-top kayaks, packrafts, and inflatable kayaks are often much wider, usually between 80–100 cm. For 80 cm wide kayaks, add 10–15 cm; for 90 cm wide kayaks, add 15–20 cm; and for 100 cm wide kayaks, add around 20 cm.
These measurements are approximate, as the seat height and features of these special kayaks vary greatly. Kayak packages often include a basic entry-level paddle that’s great for learning and trying out paddling. Once you gain experience, you’ll better understand your preferences and can upgrade to a high-quality paddle with the exact length and features you need, while keeping the basic one as a spare.
This is the basic guideline for choosing a kayak paddle length, but remember that your paddling style also plays an important role in selecting the right paddle.
