Wetsuits are an essential part of the gear for anyone spending a lot of time on the water, but they’re also great for more casual use — you don’t need to be a water sports pro to benefit from one. In the Nordics, warm water and long summers aren’t guaranteed, so a wetsuit helps you extend your season — starting earlier in spring and staying out longer into autumn. Neoprene wetsuits are ideal for activities like paddleboarding, snorkeling, swimming, jet skiing, wakeboarding, and towable tube riding. When buying a neoprene wetsuit, it’s important to know that it should fit snugly. The insulation works by trapping a thin layer of water between your skin and the neoprene, which your body quickly warms up. This warm water stays in place, keeping you comfortable even in cooler conditions. Based on experience, an average-thickness wetsuit (around 3/2 mm) can make 10°C water feel closer to 20°C. While this isn’t an exact scientific measurement, it gives a good idea of how much extra warmth a properly fitted wetsuit can provide, though comfort always depends on the individual.
